Paintings of Place
___________________________________________________________________________________________________

I am a painter, the landscapes and cityscapes of specific places form my primary subject matter, and I work mostly with watercolor. Within a painting, I try to balance representation, formal concerns, and my subjective experience of place. I work both on location ("sketches") and in my studio.

Although each composition stands individually as a complete work, when shown together the paintings and drawings form elements in a visual meditation. Operating with one another, they visually recreate my impression and experience of place. Through this subjective realism, I hope to spark in the viewer both a connection and a sense of presence. This web gallery makes it possible for viewers to see the images in a series together once again, despite the scattered locations of the paintings themselves.  I hope you enjoy the site!

My subjects are locations to which I feel a strong connection, and I intensify my sense of place by spending as much time as possible painting, drawing, and writing "on site." Although my camera serves as a second sketchbook, the verbal, painted, and drawn sketches and notes documenting my experience are indispensable, and serve as the primary material for recapturing the color, light, texture, and feeling of that particular place.

This web site contains images about five locations: the old city of Jerusalem, the northern coast of Maine, the landscapes of West Texas and New Mexico, the San Francisco Bay area, and the Lava Beds / Tule Lake region of Northern California. The last two places are grouped together within the "Northern California Gallery," and contain a majority of my most recent images.
